The Institute for Systems and Robotics - Porto (ISR) is a research center jointly created by the three biggest Universities in Portugal: University of Porto, University of Coimbra and the University of Lisbon. The center is organized in three research units, on located in each of the Universities. The research unit Institute for Systems and Robotics – Porto (ISR-P) is hosted by the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) and develops R&D activities in advanced systems and control concepts, tools and technologies for a wide range of areas encompassing robotics, automation, networked vehicles and systems, and, in particular, new emerging network centric systems with high societal impact.
ISR-P develops basic and applied research in the areas of hierarchical decision and control in hybrid (mixed continuous-time and discrete-event systems) systems, with applications to manufacturing and mobile robotics. ISR-P also researches in the area of real-time and dependable middleware and communications services for sensor networks. During the past few years, the group has sharpened its expertise on Sensor Networks, Hierarchical Decision, Self-Organizing Systems, Hybrid Systems – both continuous-time and discrete-event systems – with main application on manufacturing and autonomous Systems. This expertise have been mostly fruitful on Smart Components domain, based upon the effectiveness and reliability on Sensor & Actuator developments on the Plug ’n’ Play concept integration.
Role and contribution to Co-FACTOR:
ISR was the leader of task force 3 “Sub-machines and components”. Further ISR was strongly involved in task 3.2 which coped with standardization efforts and best practices sharing, task 2.3 “Engagement of young adults and students” as well as task 5.2 in which future challenges for smart components were defined.
